Healthcare costs—including medical treatments, preventive checkups, and health insurance premiums—are rising every year and can take up a major share of your annual expenses. The good news? You can claim deductions for many of these costs while filing your tax return.

Medical Expense Deductions You Can Claim

Here’s a quick breakdown of the sections under which you can save taxes on medical expenses:

  • Section 80D

    Deduction for premiums paid towards health insurance for yourself, your family, and your parents.

  • Section 80DD

    Deduction for expenses incurred on the treatment and care of a dependent with a disability.

  • Section 80DDB

    Deduction for medical treatment of specified diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s, chronic kidney failure, etc.

  • Section 80U

    Deduction for individuals with a disability (self).

Steps to claim these deductions   

  1. Navigate to File > Deductions

  2. Select the relevant card i.e. Section 80U/ DD/ DDB 

  3. Enter the required details i.e. Disability type, medical expense amount, etc. for each sectionEnter the required details i.e. Disability type, medical expense amount, etc. for each section
  4. Add Deductions u/s 80DD

    Provide details of the dependent's name, relation, disability type, PAN, and medical expense amount.

  5. Add Deductions u/s 80DDB

    Enter the type of disease and treatment amount for yourself or your dependent.

  • Keep documents like medical bills, insurance premium receipts, and disability certificates (if applicable) for verification.
