Form 16 is a document issued by your employer that helps you report your salary in the tax return. However, you may not receive Form 16 for the following reasons

  • Salary income is below the taxable limit and no TDS has been deducted
  • Your employer is yet to file the TDS Return and generate Form 16s


Steps to add salary income using pay slips:


  1. Navigate to File > Incomes > Salary

    Navigate to File > Incomes > Salary

  2. Choose the Add Manually option and proceed
    Choose Add Manually option

  3. Add your employer’s name, category, and address

  4. Enter your salary breakdown, including gross salary, allowances, etc.

    Based on this you can add the salary breakdown as follows:

    You can use this information to report in your Income tax return.
    Salary Breakdown

  5. You can calculate and claim exempt allowances such as HRA, LTA, etc.

  6. Make sure to claim deductions such as professional tax and entertainment allowance
    Deductions u/s 16


    Standard Deduction is auto-calculated based on your taxable salary.



  7. Add TDS details i.e. employer’s TAN and TDS amount. Use Form 26AS to verify TDS credits.
